    • Charlie "Jersey" Earl Zane Jr., left us April 16, 2017, 10 days before his 80th birthday. He was the only child of Charles Sr. and Myrtis (Simpson) Zane. He was a Jersey boy, born in Camden, New Jersey (N.J.), April 26th, 1937.
Charlie was on his way to California when he ran out of money in Rochester, Minn. He worked for IBM and spent two years in the Army. The day he came back to Rochester, he met a friend and asked, "where are you going?" "To Winona State to play football." "Heck, I played football and baseball in the Army, I'll go with you." "Where and you going?" were four words that changed his life. It lead to his education, sports (playing, coaching and refereeing), a career, and many lifelong friendships.
He is survived by his wife, Marlys (Pater) Zane; son, Cameron (Jayne) Zane; and daughter, Stacey (Tony) Greene and their two children, Tyler and Garrett, his precious grandchildren.
Charlie donated his body to Mayo Clinic for research. We will have a celebration of his life this Sunday, April 23, from 1 to 4 in the afternoon at the East Hall in the solarium at the student union in the Kryzsko Commons building on the Winona State campus. Thank you to all of our family and friends who have supported us on this journey.
