- Woonde Grand Rapids. At the age of eight, he moved to Tenstrike, Minn. and in 1951 moved to Grand Rapids. He worked many years for Cleveland Cliffs Mining, Co. until 1983 when the mines closed. Gary also farmed and raised cattle and horses. He was a member of the Minnesota Quarter Horse Assosiation and recently inducted into the Minnesota Quarter Horse Assosiation Hall of Fame. Gary loved his family and the farm. He preceded in death by his parents; a brother; and a sister.
Gary is survived by his wife, Nancy, daughters Debra (Brian) Sjodin of Grand Rapids, Jackie (Tom) Hooker of Dayton, Minn. Patricia Pater of Chisholm, Jennifer (Scott) Johnson of Grand Rapids; son Gary (Suzanne) Pater, Jr. of Litchfield, Minn.; brother, Albert "Junior" Pater of Blackduck; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held 10 a.m. Monday, Juni 29, followed by an 11 a.m. Memorial Service Both in St.Andrew's Luheran Church, Grand Rapids with the Rev. Geore B. Gilbertson officiating.
Arrangements are by the Rowe Funeral Home & Crematory, Grand Rapids.
