Best Friend Writes That Pater Was Killed When Plane Crashed Into Ocean.
Mr. and Mrs. Albert Pater becomethe first Sheldon parents to lose two sons in the service of their country sice Pearl Harbor, it was learned this week when the sad news received of the dead of PFC. John Pater in the Philipines.
Altho no official word through government sources has been received of this tragic event, details have been received from his best friend telling of his death in a plane accident and his burrial. Latest word, received here today states that a plane in which he was ridingcrashed into the sea. PFC Pater's neck was found to be broken, when he was taken from the plane after it was pulled from the water. It is not known here whether death was cause from his injury or drowning.
First word of the accident was received here Tuesday when the Pater familie received a card of synpathy from Mrs. Klaas Klassen, whose husband is stationed in the philipines, andwho was a very close friend of John Pater. Upon a telephone call to learn if there was not some mistake, the Paters found that Mr. Klassen had written that he had just left the site of his best friend who wasdead in a Manilla hospital and gave some details of the accident. Another letter received by Mrs. Klassen, gave further details of the accident and said that PFC John had been buried in a ManillaCementry.
John Pater would hve been 19 years old on november 18. He went into the Army March 13, 1944 and was last home on furlough in May. He returned from furlough to Camp Gruber, Oklahoma, and from there was sent to Luzon. Since that time he has been based about 50 miles from Manilla, with an artillery unit.
He is servived by 3 Sisters: Mrs. Frank (Gertrude)(Gertie) Schnider of Sheldon, Iowa. Mrs. Gerrit (Jennie) Plantage of Sargent, minn. Mrs. Vic (Ida) Stanton, Sprit Lake. Iowa. Five Brothers Charles (Charlie) of lake Park, Iowa. Gerrit of Tenstrike, minn. Herman of Grand Rapids, minn. Tony of Blackduck, minn. Art or Sanborn, Iowa and his Parents.
